Dear Church Family,

If you had a bottle labeled “vitamins” and one labeled “poison,” which one would you open and take? It would be completely foolish to willingly ingest poison into your body! Today I was reading through Romans 6:15-23. In this passage Paul compares our old life, as slaves to sin, and our new lives, as slaves to righteousness. His point is, “Why would you go back to your old master, when all he tried to do was kill you?” This is especially true, since our new Master only wants what is good to us. Just because we now have the choice, as believers, to choose righteousness or sin, it would be just as foolish as choosing poison instead of vitamins, just because you have the choice.

Romans 6:15-16 (ESV)
What then? Are we to sin because we are not under law but under grace? By no means! 16 Do you not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness?

As you look back on your week, how have you been tempted to go back to your old master? Have you bought into his lies? He promises you life through sin, but he’s really feeding you poison. Stop listening to his lies and start identifying the true reality and fruit of sin.

Romans 6:20-21 (ESV)
For when you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. 21 But what fruit were you getting at that time from the things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death.

The good news is, the other option leads to life. How can you choose life today? What decisions can you make to reject the lie of sin and choose the truth from God?

Romans 6:22-23 (ESV)
But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the fruit you get leads to sanctification and its end, eternal life. 23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
