January 3, 2025

Dear Church Family,

It’s hard to believe that it’s a new year and we’re now three days into 2025! As we begin this year, my challenge for you is to take the next step in your relationship with Jesus Christ. On Sunday, we looked at Philippians 3:1-14 and saw Paul’s new confidence, relationship, and pursuit of Jesus Christ. The main thing in Paul’s life now, the one thing that was worth more than anything else, was “knowing Christ.”

Philippians 3:7-11 (ESV)
But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ. 8 Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ 9 and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith 10 that I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, 11 that by any means possible I may attain the resurrection from the dead.

What is the main thing in your life? Is it knowing Him? Just like anything worth pursuing, growing into a deeper relationship with God takes time and effort. Paul reminds us that we have to forget what lies behind and strain forward to what lies ahead.

Philippians 3:13-14 (ESV)
Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

What, from your past, is holding you back? How can you put it behind you? What would it look like for you to press on and strain forward this year spiritually? Not just to become a better person, but because you want to know Christ more deeply? Would you take some time today to pray and ask God to reveal Himself to you this year, as you pursue Him? What step forward can you make in 2025? Would you be willing to write down one specific way you still strain forward? Then, work on a plan on how you will do that this year. Finally, share that goal with someone in your life.
There are many good things to pursue this year. There is only one thing worth more than all other pursuits combined: knowing Him!

Jeremiah 9:23-24 (ESV)
Thus says the Lord: “Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom, let not the mighty man boast in his might, let not the rich man boast in his riches, 24 but let him who boasts boast in this, that he understands and knows me, that I am the Lord who practices steadfast love, justice, and righteousness in the earth. For in these things I delight, declares the Lord.”

What’s Happening at Gospel Life:

No Youth Group: We’re taking off this  Sunday and will get back to our normal Sunday evening gatherings on January 12th.

Read the Bible in a Year: Every year I present the challenge to the church of reading through the Bible in a year. The goal is knowing God more through His Word, not simply checking something off our list. If you read through the whole Bible this past year, we want to celebrate with a special dinner. Please contact Pastor Dave in the next couple of weeks so we can place a date for the dinner. We’ll have the same challenge for this new year. If you are looking for a reading plan, you can find one here:
https://biblereadingplangenerator.com/

Elder Training: Our next Elder Training is Tuesday, January 7th at 7 pm at the Bronleewes’ house. We’ll continue our study in 1 Timothy 6. Please contact Pastor Dave if you have any questions or need a copy of the homework.

Communion: We will be celebrating the Lord’s Supper as part of our Sunday morning service on Sunday, January 26th. Through the ordinance of communion, we remember the sacrifice Jesus made to save us from our sins.

Life Groups: If you’re interested in joining a life group, we have several to choose from. You can check them out here:

Request Prayer: It’s important for us to be praying for each other as a church! If you ever need prayer, we would love to come alongside you. You can always turn in a prayer request on Sundays using the Connection Card, but you can also submit a prayer request online at any time:

This Coming Sunday:
The Need for Qualified Leaders (Part 3) – This Sunday we’ll get back to our series in the book of 1 Timothy, titled “Foundations for the Household of God.” We’ll continue to look at 1 Timothy 3:1-7 and examine what God is looking for in church leaders.
