Dear Church Family,

As we approach Mother’s Day, I’ve been thinking about the powerful influence a mother can make in the spiritual lives of her children. I’m thankful for the godly influence of my mom and I’m incredibly grateful for the godly influence my wife is to our children. I’m reminded from Scripture of the godly women in Timothy’s life.

2 Timothy 1:5 (ESV)
I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, dwells in you as well.

Timothy had a strong heritage of faith, first in his grandmother, and then in his own mother. It appears that Timothy’s father wasn’t a believer (Acts 16:1), but through the influence of these godly women, Timothy came into a saving faith. In fact, later we find out that Timothy was taught the Word from a young age.

2 Timothy 3:14-15 (ESV)
But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it 15 and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.

Who led you to the Lord? Who did He use to help you understand the truth of the Gospel? For many of us, it was a family member. For others, it was a spiritual father or mother, a Sunday School teacher, a faithful friend, a loving coworker, or a series of people. We know that God uses some to plant the seed and others to water it. When is the last time you’ve thanked that person for their part in your spiritual journey? I’m sure that would be a huge encouragement to them today. You can thank God for them. You can also ask Him to use you in the same way He used them; that you could leave a spiritual mark on someone’s life, whether it’s your own child or, like Paul with Timothy, a spiritual child. We’re called to spread the seed, plant it, and water it. How does God want to use you?
