Dear Church Family,

I finished going through the Psalms in my quiet times this past week and just started going through the Gospel of John. I wanted to take a minute to encourage you to have consistent personal time in God’s Word each week. You might already have this habit, but if not, the Bible is one of the primary ways God feeds us and grows us as believers. Think about trying to live on a physical diet of eating once, or maybe twice a week. That wouldn’t be fun at all and you would end up malnourished and unhealthy. The same thing is true with God’s Word. I love Peter’s reminder in 2 Peter 2:2-3.

2 Peter 2:2-3 (ESV)
Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation— 3 if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good.

If you’re new to having a personal devotion, try starting with a book like the Gospel of John. It gives a powerful picture of Jesus as the Son of God. Don’t start too big, but take smaller chunks and really take time to digest them. Start with prayer and ask God to help you to truly understand His Word. Spend time at the end asking God to show you how He wants you to change in light of the truth you read. You can also try taking notes and start to journal about what you’ve read.
The reality is that the Bible isn’t just a book of good human wisdom, but is the very Word of God written by the Creator of the universe. It describes itself as being “breathed out” by God. I love that God didn’t just create everything, but He also wanted us to know Him. He gave us the Bible so that we can know who He is, how to have a relationship with Him, and how we can know ourselves, others, and the world He created.

2 Timothy 3:16-17 (ESV)
All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.
