Dear Church Family,

What do people usually do with power and authority? It’s common to use it to push others down and rare to use it to lift others up. We know that there’s no one with more power and authority than God Himself. Psalm 113 is a Psalm of praise, declaring how great God is. I love the description of just how high and exalted God truly is.

Psalm 113:4-6 (ESV)
The Lord is high above all nations,
and his glory above the heavens!
5    Who is like the Lord our God,
who is seated on high,
6    who looks far down
on the heavens and the earth?

The psalmist wants us to know just how high and glorious God is. We often think of God as residing in heaven, but the psalmist describes him as looking far down on both the earth and the heavens.

Psalm 113:7-9 (ESV)
He raises the poor from the dust
and lifts the needy from the ash heap,
8    to make them sit with princes,
with the princes of his people.
9    He gives the barren woman a home,
making her the joyous mother of children.
Praise the Lord!

Perhaps even more striking than the description of God’s glory is how He uses His position. God loves to lift up those who are low; like the poor, the needy, and the barren. He opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble (1 Peter 5:5). How is your stance towards God? Have you humbled yourself to Him or have you tried to lift up yourself? How is your stance to others? We can learn a lot about how to treat others in how God treats us. How are you using the authority God has given you? Are you using it to lift up others or to push them down? Look at the invitation from Jesus in Revelation 3:21, in which He offers to lift up and share His authority with those who follow Him.

Revelation 3:21 (ESV)
The one who conquers, I will grant him to sit with me on my throne, as I also conquered and sat down with my Father on his throne.
