Dear Church Family,

The Book of Jeremiah is filled with impending judgment upon Judah, but it is also filled with hope of a coming Messiah. As I was reading this morning in Jeremiah 23 about the failure of the spiritual shepherds, the passage turns towards that hope. I found these words very encouraging:

Jeremiah 23:5-6 (ESV)
“Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. 6 In his days Judah will be saved, and Israel will dwell securely. And this is the name by which he will be called: ‘The Lord is our righteousness.’”

We know that the righteous Branch in David’s line is Jesus Christ. Though we are still waiting for the day when He will reign as king, we have already experienced the reason He will be called, “The Lord is our righteousness.” When Jesus died on the cross, not only did He take our sin upon Himself, but He also gave us His righteousness.

2 Corinthians 5:21 (ESV)
For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

We know that “all our righteous deeds are like a polluted garment” (Isaiah 64:6b) and that, “as it is written: ‘None is righteous, no, not one’” (Romans 3:10). Our standing before God doesn’t have anything to do with how good we are. It has everything to do with how righteous Jesus is. The next time you are tempted to believe Satan’s lies that Jesus isn’t enough, or are tempted to believe that you need to become righteous to earn God’s favor, remember that, “The Lord is our righteousness.”
