Dear Church Family, Do you have any habits or routines that you like to regularly perform? Habits can be helpful in keeping us consistent in areas that are important to us. While experts disagree on how long it takes to form a habit, we can all agree that consistency is vital. I was reading this week in Acts 3, where it describes Peter and John healing a lame man, while on their way to the temple. What caught my attention, especially in light of Paul’s focus on prayer in 1 Timothy 2:1-8, is the mention of “the hour of prayer.”
We don’t know how often they went to the temple for prayer, but I thought it was interesting that there were dedicated times of prayer. This specific one was at the ninth hour (3 pm). People would gather at this time for the afternoon sacrifice and would join in prayer while the priests performed their duties. It made me think, do I have an “hour of prayer?” Now, I’m not talking about a specific interval of sixty minutes, but a specific time dedicated to prayer. Am I consistent in spending this time with the Lord? Is it a habit? How about you? Is prayer a “first of all” priority in your life? Try finding a specific time that you can get alone with the Lord. Jesus did it when He was on earth. Luke 5:16 tells us, “But he would withdraw to desolate places and pray.” How much more do we need it?
