Dear Church Family, Losing power isn’t very fun. Whether it’s your phone or computer running out of battery or something more serious, like your house losing electricity, it’s a helpless feeling. So many things we take for granted just aren’t possible. I just started reading through the book of Acts in my devotions and was reminded of the incredible gift God has given us in the Holy Spirit. Acts 1 describes Jesus’ last interaction with His disciples before He ascends to heaven. It contains a reissue of the great commission, reminding us of our overarching mission here on earth:
This mission seems overwhelming, especially since we’re called, not just to be His witnesses, but to “Go therefore, and make disciples of all nations…” (Matthew 28:19). On our own, this is impossible, and we feel powerless. The good news is that Jesus reminds the disciples that they would receive “power” when they received the Holy Spirit. In Acts 2, we see the incredible difference the Holy Spirit makes. The disciples receive that power on the Day of Pentecost and turn the world upside down for Christ. Wouldn’t it be amazing to have that power in us? If you are a believer, you have that same power because that same Holy Spirit is inside of you.
The good news is we have the power of the Holy Spirit in us today. Are we living in His power or trusting in our own? Right after Jesus said the amazing words of Acts 1:8 to the disciples, He was lifted up and a cloud took Him out of view. I imagine it would be frightening to be given that charge and then see Jesus vanish out of sight. I’m sure they were strengthened, though, not just because of the power Jesus just mentioned, but by His words even before He died.
Jesus has sent the Helper to each of us. Today, make sure you’re living out of the power of the Spirit. Make sure you remember the amazing gift you’ve received. –Pastor Dave What’s Happening at Gospel Life:Youth Group: Join us this Sunday, November 10th, from 5-7 pm at the Bronleewes’ house.
