Dear Church Family,

Sometimes we need to go back to the beginning. Sometimes we need a reset. One of the first things I do, when I’m having computer trouble, is reboot them. I finished reading through the Gospel of John this week. Every time I read through it, I marvel at John 21. This chapter occurs after the resurrection and Jesus has appeared to the disciples multiple times. For some reason, Peter decides to go back to his old occupation, fishing, and some of the other disciples go with him. Maybe he had bills to pay, was processing everything he had experienced, or didn’t feel like he deserved another chance. We know that each of the disciples had failed Jesus and were in deep need of restoration. As the chapter unfolds, Jesus gives them exactly that and takes them back to the beginning. Peter had been a fisherman when Jesus first called him to follow Him (Mark 1:16-20). Peter had once experienced a miraculous catch of fish at Jesus’ insistence after a night of catching nothing (Luke 5:1-11). So, how fitting is it, after the disciples went back to their old life, that Jesus calls them again. This happens again after another night of catching nothing.

John 21:4-6 (ESV)
Just as day was breaking, Jesus stood on the shore; yet the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. 5 Jesus said to them, “Children, do you have any fish?” They answered him, “No.” 6 He said to them, “Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some.” So they cast it, and now they were not able to haul it in, because of the quantity of fish.

John recognizes that it is Jesus, tells Peter, and Peter jumps into the water and swims straight to shore. He finds that Jesus has prepared breakfast for them. Through this meal shared together, Jesus extends fellowship once again to the disciples. Next, He takes Peter aside and powerfully restores him. His was probably the most pronounced failure, as he had three times denied Jesus. So, three times, Jesus calls him to feed His sheep. Then, in verse 19, Jesus takes Peter all the way back to when he first called him and says, “Follow me.”
Maybe you need a reset. Just like the disciples, you’ve failed the Lord and need to be restored. Just as Jesus forgave you when you first met Him, He is ready to forgive you again. Maybe you feel unworthy to follow Him. Just like Jesus called you at the beginning, He is calling you again.

1 John 1:9 (ESV)
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
