Dear Church Family,

In John 10, Jesus calls Himself the Good Shepherd. He is the shepherd who loves His sheep by laying His life down for them. He leads them, provides for them, and protects them. Jesus also uses the image of Himself as the door. A shepherd would also sleep in the entrance to the sheepfold, so that no one could enter or leave except through him. No one enters into the family of God except through Jesus Christ. There are so many beautiful truths in these images.

Today, as I was reading, I was drawn to Jesus’ use of His voice as the Shepherd.

John 10:4-5 (ESV)
When he has brought out all his own, he goes before them, and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice. 5 A stranger they will not follow, but they will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers.”

Ultimately, this is speaking of coming to Jesus as our Lord and Savior. We listen to Him by looking to Him for eternal life. But this also made me ask the question, “Whose voice am I listening to today?” Jesus contrasts Himself with several other individuals in this passage: the thief, the robber, the stranger, the wolf, and the hired hand. It would be completely foolish to listen to any of these voices or follow after them. Jesus explains it clearly:

John 10:10 (ESV)
The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.

Whose voice are you listening to today? Are you listening to the Good Shepherd, looking to Him to lead you, protect you, and provide for you?
