Dear Church Family,

I finished up the book of Proverbs in my quiet times this week. Chapter 30 had so many great lessons on wisdom, but verses seven through nine really made me stop as I read them:

Proverbs 30:7-9 (ESV)
Two things I ask of you;
deny them not to me before I die:
8    Remove far from me falsehood and lying;
give me neither poverty nor riches;
feed me with the food that is needful for me,
9    lest I be full and deny you
and say, “Who is the Lord?”
or lest I be poor and steal
and profane the name of my God.

We’re warned against the excess of both extreme riches and extreme poverty. Not many would choose extreme poverty, so it isn’t much of a temptation for many. But riches are a harder temptation to avoid. The world constantly preaches that more is better, and we often fall victim to its allure. We end up forgetting God and thinking we can find happiness apart from Him. In the end, we’re never satisfied and always want more. I love the explanation later in the Proverb:

Proverbs 30:15-16 (ESV)
The leech has two daughters:
Give and Give.
Three things are never satisfied;
four never say, “Enough”:
16    Sheol, the barren womb,
the land never satisfied with water,
and the fire that never says, “Enough.”

Just like a leech that always wants more, greed produces a heart that is never satisfied. It’s important that we learn contentment and the value of not having too much or too little. How content are you in what you already have? During this season when we remember God’s incredible gift of His Son, let’s remember this truth:

Acts 20:35 (ESV)
In all things I have shown you that by working hard in this way we must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ ”
