Dear Church Family, Do you ever find yourself wishing things were better? Whether it’s the state of our nation, your personal finances, your closeness to God, you or someone you love’s health, or some difficulty you’re facing, we all have a deep-seated longing for things to be made right. It’s important for us to keep hope in the middle of the hardships of life. Things may not get better now or even on this side of heaven, but God will make things right. It’s part of His redeeming nature. I was reminded of this hope when I came to Isaiah 25 this week. After a series of chapters of judgment upon the nations, including Jerusalem itself and all the earth, Isaiah turns to the coming Kingdom that Jesus will establish when He comes to rule as the perfect King. Isaiah 25:6-8 (ESV) On this mountain the Lord of hosts will make for all peoples a feast of rich food, a feast of well-aged wine, of rich food full of marrow, of aged wine well refined. 7 And he will swallow up on this mountain the covering that is cast over all peoples, the veil that is spread over all nations. 8 He will swallow up death forever; and the Lord God will wipe away tears from all faces, and the reproach of his people he will take away from all the earth, for the Lord has spoken.
I love this description of a mountaintop feast, representing God’s connection to and lavish provision for His people. I also love the description of God swallowing up death forever. This great enemy that we have faced since the fall, death, will not just be mitigated or limited, but completely swallowed up. The pain and loss that we now face will be wiped away. The hurt and reproach we have gone through will be taken away. God will redeem and restore! We look forward in hope, but right now we’re in the waiting. But we don’t wait with wishful hope, we wait with full assurance that one day we will experience that which we’ve waited for. Isaiah 25:9 (ESV) It will be said on that day, “Behold, this is our God; we have waited for him, that he might save us. This is the Lord; we have waited for him; let us be glad and rejoice in his salvation.”
