Dear Church Family, Have you ever had your car stuck in the mud or snow? It’s a helpless feeling, especially when you’ve tried everything you know to get it unstuck. It’s humbling, but sometimes we need to ask for help. Sin can also be like that. Is there a certain sin that consistently trips you up or you feel stuck in? Sin can leave us feeling helpless and hopeless. In Romans 6-8, Paul wants to give us hope! He describes the struggle of feeling stuck: Romans 7:15-20 (ESV) For I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate. 16 Now if I do what I do not want, I agree with the law, that it is good. 17 So now it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me. 18 For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out. 19 For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing. 20 Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me.
But he doesn’t leave us there! God has given us the help we need in the person of the Holy Spirit. Listen to these words of hope: Romans 8:2 (ESV) For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death. Romans 8:11 (ESV) If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.
Paul reminds us that the same Holy Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead is living in us. If he was able to accomplish that miracle, He can work a miracle in you in freeing you from sin’s hold on you. Will you ask Him for help?
