Dear Church Family,

It’s easier to see sin in others than it is in ourselves. I’ve been going through the book of Romans and in chapter two I read some convicting words from Paul:

Romans 2:1 (ESV)
Therefore you have no excuse, O man, every one of you who judges. For in passing judgment on another you condemn yourself, because you, the judge, practice the very same things.

Paul had just explained that all humanity knew to worship God, having seen Him in His creation, but refused to worship Him and worshipped the creation instead. Paul knows the temptation, that we would see this truth in others, but not ourselves. So he starts chapter two exposing our judgmental hearts and calling us to look inward at our own sinfulness. Later in this chapter he asks:

Romans 2:21–23 (ESV)
you then who teach others, do you not teach yourself? While you preach against stealing, do you steal? 22 You who say that one must not commit adultery, do you commit adultery? You who abhor idols, do you rob temples? 23 You who boast in the law dishonor God by breaking the law.

Whenever we feel judgmental towards others, it’s probably a good time to look at ourselves. I’ve often found, sadly, that the very things that upset me about others are also true of me, if I’d only be willing to see it. Would you be willing to look inwardly today and ask God to show you sin in your life that you haven’t seen before? Would you pray this prayer of David?

Psalm 139:23–24 (ESV)
Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! 24 And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting!
